An email landed in my inbox recently–just a few lines that read like opening a packet of wildflower seeds, heavy with promise and future and wonder.
Or maybe just as much like receiving a reminder of a long-ago rain check, the kind only God can issue.
A calling I accepted on faith years ago is beginning to show up in my life in small but surprising ways. This calling? It’s taken the long way, the out-of-the-way way, the it’s-never-going-to-happen-in-a-million-years way for us to intersect. Some callings are like that.
Other callings show up on time, obey our agenda, and line up like little ducks in a row.
But what’s a mom to do when her callings collide?
The world has much to say about this, the voices noisy with conviction. I don’t want to join the loud cacophony that breaks into a woman’s life when she becomes a mom.
Instead, there’s just this one thing.
For the mom who’s struggling with decision.
For the mom who knows what she’s about.
For the mom who fears.
For the mom who longs.
For the mom who waits.
For the mom who’s lost her vision.
For the mom who’s given up.
Having snatched a glimpse of one of my own dream-of-my-heart callings, I only offer this one thing: if you’ve chosen to set aside a season to make motherhood a singular purpose and priority, fight off any doubts you’ve missed another calling, especially one God’s spoken to and gifted you for.
It’s already on the way.
It may be the long way. The out-of-the-way way. The it’s-never-going-to-happen-in-a-million-years way. And when it shows up, you may not even recognize it at first.
But when the connect finally happens, its symmetry of timing and rightness will pulse with God’s light and sovereignty. And very likely, a bit of mystery.
If He’s asking you to put aside a calling for a time, be all in, lean all in, to what He has for you right now. He won’t waste a moment, I promise. Then trust Him with the release and watch seeds of surprise bloom in due season.
You’ll see. A divine rain check is coming, and with it unexpected adventure.
